As I tried to determine what would be the highest and best use of the pyramids, and how their funding would impact the epilepsy community, I realized that I had two major goals. The first was that Kevin's life would not be forgotten, and the second that his life would serve the epilepsy community in a meaningful way.
The original goal of the pyramid collection was to raise $1,000,000 in funding, with each pyramid generating $50,000. To fulfill this dream, the Epilepsy Foundation, in conjunction with the American Epilepsy Society, announced the Kevin's Fellow Award Program, which annually grants $50,000 to the most promising research candidates who will build their careers with a focus on epilepsy. The award is funded through major donations to EF and AES, with each pyramid-level donor receiving a pyramid in recognition of their generosity and support. It is our hope and belief that funding bright, creative young minds will hasten the journey to alleviate the ravages of this disease, and ultimately, to a cure. For those living with the day-to-day difficulties and heartbreak of epilepsy, relief cannot come soon enough.
I am grateful to the Epilepsy Foundation and the leadership of Phil Gattone for recognizing my goals, and for partnering with me to help these dreams be realized. I also want to thank and recognize Kim Macher for her vision and absolute support in this project. Thank you so much for all your friendship, love, and support, Kim! I also want to recognize Vaneeda Bennett for the conception and proposal of the Kevin's Fellow Award Program, a brilliant design that both honors Kevin and his life, and furthers the goals of all involved in the epilepsy community. Thank you so much, Vaneeda!
I am honored to work with everyone at the Foundation, and so very grateful.
